I think many of us who are digitally savvy assume Internet slang and abbreviations to be cognates as we see so many nations use them. But we know this not to be true among those less savvy.

An excellent example was a mother who wrote “LOL” on the Facebook page of a friend who announced her husband’s passing. Her daughter was mortified and asked her why she would write such an insensitive thing.

“Why is it bad? It means Lots of Love.”

“No, Mom. It means Laughing Out Loud.”

“Oh, dear! I have a lot of people to apologize to!”
