The Dunes by Winslow Homer, 1894 (public domain - MFA)

The past few summers of traditional travel have been…weird. Mostly thanks to Covid.

When we were quarantined at home, we had to get creative with our time.

Some people got into puzzles, others explored live audio apps like Clubhouse.

We suddenly had more time to read, with books acting as our passports.

Thankfully, this month I’m headed to the beach and I’ll take some beach reading with me.

But I was reminded of a time not too long ago, when folks were stranded, how one reader got really creative with her bookshelf.

They organized their books to tell a story:

The titles of books arranged sequentially on two shelves: The English patient had caught it on the beach. “I should have stayed home,” she said. Now she was in quarantine in the dark house of splendid isolation. Still, hope springs eternal. With a little bit of luck, commonsense, and personal hygiene, the Corona book of horror stories must end soon. Always remember: clean hands save lives and when in doubt, don’t go out!
